More than 25 years ago Isabel Garretón dreamed of finding a way to make a difference in the world. She thought of the women of her native Chile, talented artisans, who, despite their incredible hand embroidery, hand smocking and dressmaking skills, did not have the ability to make a decent living and, therefore, sufficiently provide and care for their children. With her passion for sketching dresses and their skillset, Ms. Garretón was certain she could expand the market for these beautiful dresses beyond Chile and, as a result, dramatically improve the lives of these women and their families.

Working with a group of 21 underprivileged women, she designed a small collection of exquisitely appointed, hand-embroidered dresses and brought them back to the United States to gauge interest. This was the launch of Isabel Garretón children’s clothing. A sought-after luxury brand, today Isabel Garretón can be found in the finest department and specialty stores in the country, from Saks Fifth Avenue to Barneys New York to Bergdorf Goodman, as well as fine children’s clothing boutiques worldwide.

Isabel Garretón did more than start an apparel company in Chile, Bordechi, Ltda., to support the demand the brand was generating in the USA; she pioneered the concept of social enterprise in Chile and the U.S. children’s apparel industry.

Isabel recognized the talents of these Chilean women, enabled them to work from home while caring for their children, and paid them fair wages for their work. She empowered them to create a better life for themselves and their children by bringing opportunity to their doorsteps. The result: Ms. Garretón not only created an important role for women in her traditionally male-dominated country, she also helped break the cycle of poverty that has plagued women for generations.

Today, Ms. Garretón continues to seek out skilled artisans who can sew, embroider, crochet and produce some of the world’s last true hand smocking. She discovers authentic folk art in remote corners of the country and finds a way to incorporate it into her designs, enabling artisans who had lived in poverty to literally put new roofs on their homes and educate their children. This is the hallmark of her social enterprise and her commitment to addressing the basic need for these artisans to earn a living, while paying homage to the traditions that hold their communities together.

Ms. Garreton’s talent for designing contemporary children’s fashions that combine artisan skills with classic styling and the use of noble materials such as cotton and silk, as well as more modern materials for a different affect altogether, has set a new standard for ethically produced luxury children’s clothing in the U.S.

The enduring appeal of her timeless designs and the unsurpassed quality of their construction has earned Isabel Garretón a place in numerous children’s fashion magazines over the years, including Parents, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Victoria, Babiekins, Martha Stewart Weddings, Brides, Town & Country and Bambini Collezioni..

“The companies we are honoring as the best for the world represent the cutting edge of a global movement using business as a force for good. We are inspired by them, and feel deeply honored to join them in this historic and ground-breaking celebration,” said Bryan Welch, CEO of B the Change Media, the multiplatform media company that publishes the quarterly B Magazine and host of the Best for the World event at the University of California, Berkeley on September 8, 2016.

A total of 515 Certified B Corporations were named 2016 Best For the World Honorees, including: The Honest Company; Cooperative Home Care Associates; and Traditional Medicinals. Thirty-five countries are represented, including Afghanistan, Kenya, Vietnam, and Turkey. The selection criteria for Best for the World honorees are available at

The 2016 Best for the World Honorees represent nearly one-third of all B Corps, displaying a wide range of excellence throughout the community. Today there are more than 1,800 Certified B Corporations across over 120 industries and 42 countries, unified by one common goal: to redefine success in business. Any company can measure and manage social and environmental performance at

‘Tis the Season To Give, Changing the World One Dress at a Time

Posted by Veronica Galen on Dec 1, 2014 6:00:00 AM

Veronica Cutter

Giving Tuesday, a national day of giving, is December 2nd. What a great way to remind us of our good fortune and give us an opportunity to take a break from our busy lives to donate or contribute to the many worthy causes that benefit people around the world, as well as those closer to home in our own communities.

December also marks the beginning of the holiday gift-giving season, another great opportunity to give back, with gifts that benefit others every time we purchase them and make us feel good about ourselves. When we first introduced our luxury children’s clothing in 1990, social enterprise companies, like ours, were virtually unheard of. Since then, the social purpose movement has gained much momentum. I am proud to be a pioneer in this growing movement and it makes me happy to see so many appreciating the difference when it comes to ethical manufacturing.

With your enthusiastic support of our brand, we have proven that social enterprise works. When we started, we worked with a group of 21 underprivileged women in Chile, true artisans, to create a small collection of exquisitely appointed, hand-embroidered girls dresses. Today, the Isabel Garretón dresses, coats, matching purses, and other accessories that you found and purchased in the finest department and specialty stores in the country have helped us support more than 100 Chilean women and their families.

Social responsibility continues to be woven into each and every Isabel Garretón garment, making it possible for these hardworking, talented women to break the cycle of poverty, provide for their families and educate their children.

When thinking about your next gift purchase, or new holiday dress, give some thought to the brand that made it. If you find out that the person who made this product is being treated fairly, receiving fair wages and is able to sufficiently provide for his or her family, you have made this world a better place for all.

We believe we can change the world one dress at a time and do it everyday. The giving season makes it all the more special.

Best wishes for a joyful holiday season.

Thanksgiving and the Power of Gratitude

Posted by Veronica Galen on Nov 23, 2014 6:26:00 PM

5 things we are thankful for at Isabel Garretón

As a brand that gives back with every stitch and every design inspiration, we have much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving.  Like Oprah, we focus on what we have and what we have accomplished in our quest to help Chilean artisans and their families live a better life.  We feel so grateful for the opportunity to make a sustainable difference in the lives of so many good hearted, talented and hard working people over the last 25 years.

Here are the 5 things we are thankful for this Thanksgiving:

  1. Those who support our social enterprise to help women.

  2. The talent of the artisans who make each of our designs unique.

  3. The fairytales and fantasies that make childhood special and give us endless inspiration.

  4. The shared family time that Thanksgiving and other holidays bring.

  5. A moment to pause and say ‘thank you’ for the things in life that make us happy.

Dressing Little Ones for Thanksgiving Gatherings: Cozy and Beautiful Girls’ Dresses that are Oh-So-Perfect!

Posted by Veronica Galen on Nov 10, 2014 3:00:00 AM

Now that summer has turned to fall and Halloween is behind us, the holiday season has officially begun. While our thoughts naturally turn to Christmas celebrations, we also are gearing up for our first big family holiday of the season, Thanksgiving. Chances are, you’re already busy making arrangements to share this day of gratitude with friends and family from near and far. If your family is like mine, Thanksgiving is not a moveable feast. It is always at our place and the dishes we share are part of a long family tradition, where the cards with Grandma’s handwritten recipes are brought out and repeated year after year to everyone’s satisfaction.

We gather together around the table before sitting down and everyone takes turns sharing something special they are thankful for this year. Laughter and teary moments come from this much-anticipated ritual. It is always so beautiful. The conversations, stories and discussions that come with the meal are legendary. Sometimes I think we hold back a whole year of thoughts just so we can share them for the first time on this special day.

Peter Pan Collar with Lace Dress

For these reasons, Thanksgiving has always had a more intimate and casual tone in my mind. Dressing for Thanksgiving should remain special. Dressing for the occasion honors an important family tradition and recognizes that this day is not like any other day. Your choice of clothing is shaped by your awareness of presenting yourself in a gathering wearing clothes that are comfortable and cozy, yet more elegant than your everyday outfits. Special accessories, like a headband or pretty cardigan, add polish and a lovely finishing touch. This is especially true for children who look forward to feeling special and still want to run around in the great outdoors and play games, indoors and out, with cousins and friends.

Grey with Orange Lace

As parents we are challenged to find children’s clothing that will make us feel proud of their appearance and give them the freedom to play without looking like they’re wearing their school clothes. That’s why I love gray and other neutrals. Gray, especially, is inherently dressy, and looks great layered with splashes of color and subtle embellishments, like ivory lace. Pair it with bright tights or a bright cardigan and you will have a happy look. Peter Pan collars, darker hemlines in equally rich fabrics, piping and even delicate flower details create a special touch.

Chevron Girls Dress

Our chocolate chevron pleated dress trimmed in soft velvet at the hem and collar is one of my favorites this season.

Gingham Girls Dress

Another favorite is the modern flair of the timeless black and white gingham dress, pair it with a nice coat and you are set! Those looking for something traditional, who are familiar with our designs, know we will always have the most beautiful hand smocked girls dress to consider.

Depending on how chilly it is outside, you can choose from a selection of cozy soft faux fur coat or tailored wool girls’ coats. Wool bucket hats, bonnets, and muffs are icing on the Thanksgiving cake.

Craftsmanship, attention to detail and beautiful styling that brings a contemporary feel to traditional skills define Isabel Garretón girls’ dresses, and everything we do. Our designs are even more meaningful knowing that every stitch is made by artisans in Chile where, for more than 20 years, we have supported more than 100 seamstresses and embroiderers and their families, giving them opportunities to earn fair wages, break the poverty cycle and educate their children. Social responsibility is woven into each and every one of our beautiful pieces. We have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. My intention, always, is to wrap your precious family holidays in timeless elegance. My hope is that our beautiful garments will endure as your family heirlooms, to be preserved and passed from generation to generation, and worn at many family gatherings to come.

Enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving.

Meet Javier! The Artisan behind our Custom Handmade Dolls!

Posted by Veronica Galen on Jul 16, 2013 7:00:00 AM

A few years back in my constant search for artisans I met Javier and his wide variety of handmade dolls and toys, I was very impressed by the playfulness and variety of his designs. It took a while for us to find a way to incorporate his dolls to what we do. I really wanted to develop a way in which anyone could engage in the creative and playful process of designing their own doll. The final pieces came together last summer our website has a Dolls Tab and is invited to create their very own doll and name it. Two to three weeks later they will receive the doll with the characteristics they chose. It has been tremendous FUN to see how engaged people get and we have had dolls with names as simple as DORA to more involved ones such as ANN WAVERLY, with and without fringe/bangs, black and white, blonds and brunettes, straight and curly name it...each with an adorable outfit!

I was intrigued by Javier and his work and decided to interview him a week ago. We met at a coffee shop where he told me how he started making dolls.

His grand father had been a carpenter and made toys, his mother also made toys, many dolls. He grew up helping them along until he went on to study graphic design, a field in which he worked for 15 years. During a visit to his parents home, in the south, he run into old magazines, pictures and toy patterns and had a revelation, this was who he was, these were his roots; he wanted to go back to the playful and fantasy environment he grew up in of handmade toys. Initially he kept his job while developing his ideas, and eventually he felt confident enough to believe he could support himself doing what he loved and he's never regretted it.

It has been a pleasure to have Javier join the group of wonderful artisans behind everything we do at IG and I look forward to the fun possibilities we will be able to offer you in the future.
