Adorn your daughters, nieces and granddaughters in the gracious style of beautiful clothes that reflect both the innocence and beauty of little girls.

The Isabel Garreton® collection is designed with comfort in mind, featuring elegant special occasion dresses, coats and Christening outfits designed for movement, growth and -of course- twirling. With sparkles sewn into fabrics that allow precious skin to breathe, cheeks to glow and small treasures to stay safe in hidden pockets, little girls feel as special as they look.

A line of handmade dolls are lovably soft and quite unique- kids create a customized version online, where they may select skin color, hairstyle, smile, clothing and name.

Isabel Garreton also offers lovely accessories for big girls, too –and recently launched Itsatwist, a collection of flexible hand-woven fabric pieces that can be worn as a scarf, wrap, top or anything else you can imagine. Quite fetching, I’d say!

My company brings timeless style, unique craftsmanship and extraordinary materials from Chile to your closet.

-Isabel Garreton

For over twenty years, Isabel’s company has provided a dignified work opportunity for disadvantaged women from her native country of Chile. All of the proceeds from the collection of women’s accessories, children’s clothing and handmade dolls go back to the women who created them. By teaching women time-honored skills like weaving and embroidery and employing them at her company, Isabel has provided them with a chance for happier and healthier lives.

Thank you for making such lovely dresses.............................

Along the way come wonderful people,  we cross paths and with our careful craft we drop a memory in their lives and they drop one in ours. Gratitude is a powerful gesture and we thoroughly appreciate it. Thank you Lisa.

Hello!

Although it has already been a year, I wanted to write and thank you for making the only dress my daughter wanted for her first communion.

She loved it and it made her long awaited day very special!

I wanted to share some of her photos with you as you graciously made changes to the dress at my daughters request.
My youngest child already has her communion dress picked out- The Melody dress-  Hopefully it will be available when she she makes her communion.
Thank you for making such lovely dresses.

Sincerely, Lisa Bancroft

Hair Toys: It's a Twist

The weather may be getting warmer — in some places anyway, but woman always has a use for a hood, especially on a windy day. However, even better, Itsatwist's flexible fabric means you can manipulate your "twist" into almost anything: a playful wrap, sexy shawl, striking belt, shrug, shoulder cover, or scarf — it's an accessory that let's you be creative, and multitask, my personal favorite.

Best of all, Itsatwist gives back — it's manufactured entirely in Chile by disadvantaged women who have been taught weaving and embroidery by Itsatwist creator/designer Isabel Garreton. 100% of the proceeds go back to the women who make them, so if you give it as a gift, you're actually gifting to two.

Special Occasion Dresses for Girls and other lovely moments

The news present a world  that is overwhelming, the bravery of Sirians, the confusion reigning Afghnistan, humans suffering for many reasons.......It is so easy to loose sight of the smaller things that build our days and bring to us a smile, a laugh, a moment full of joy. They are the moments where your effort seems pursposeful because it has made someone's day a little better.

Here are a few of those moments for us:

Thank you so much for the quick responce. Let me tell you that I have held on to this web site address since before I got married and thought of having kids. I always knew that if I had a daughter I wanted to buy her Baptismal dress at Isabel Garreton.

Good for Isabel! She is givingback to her country to help women!

Here I am splurging on my first born! I love her and she will look amazing in this beautiful dress. I felt emotional when we went to try her dresses on. I thought of all the white dresses she will be wearing for the years to come in her lifetime.

This is her first very important white/Ivory dress. Then her first communion dress will come next, maybe a 15th birthday celebration dress and one day if she wants...we will go try on her wedding dress. If God allows me to be around until then. I couldn't help but to get emotional.

I had to write….

I’m sure you’ve heard this hundreds of times before, but I just wanted to be another one to say to you how beautiful your work is!  I checked out your website thinking that in a few months I might order something.

I do already have one of your pieces having received Istanbul ‘it’s a twist’ for Christmas from my daughter.  I love it!

Well, just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself!  All my best to you and the work you do for sustainable work in Chile!

Best,

Cindy Nelson

Dear Christine and Staff,

Thank you for all your help making this happen.  Christine, there was never a moment you were not in contact-I appreciated this.  You delt with all my mom's personally, answering each question making sure their dress was ordered correctly.  The customer service Isable Garreton's staff gave was superb.  Prior to choosing your company, I was unable to find a dress maker who would outfit my flower girls' sizes ranging from 3T to 14.  Isabel Garreton custom made the size 14.  This is what I am most pleased with, all my girls had the same dress.

Each flower girl was an angel all day-it was a long weekend.  But when they donned their dress, they felt like a princess and acted the part.

Thank you for all you help and support during the planning of our wedding.  I look forward to purchasing from Isabel Garreton in the future.

Sincerely,
Carol Howell

Meryl Streep, please wear an "itsatwist" to the Oscars. Yes?

Meryl Streep, would you wear an "itsatwist" to the Oscars please?

Honestly...we would send it as a present, even the all alpaca of your choice. It does not sparkle but it is softly opulent and it is made by the hands of women that have had scarcely a shot at education... yet they spin layers of luxury that can be wrapped ,draped and tucked into many forms, like a bag a tricks that will make room for you to feel feminine.., playful.., flirtatious..We'd love it if you give it a last minute go. For sure many women, very far from here would be cheering so loud you will hear them from the red carpet...Even if you decide it is a bit warm to wear "itsatwist" on Oscar Night, we will be cheering you on!

Some thoughts on your choices:

More like Michelle Williams..Too pale and not the way to wear it.....Not the option for Oscar night

Cotton scarf used as a shawl        Scarf itsatwist used as a hood  Scarf itsatist used as a top

We could not agree if "Dublin" or "Santorini" would be the best color for you.

Scarf in shades of green called Dublin used as a cowl  Scarf the color of deep sea used as a cowl Santorini.

Then...it is OSCAR NIGHT... elegance, an issue... so we settled on two of the all alpaca Indulgence group, you choose!

Black or Taupe?

Scarf, elegant black alpaca.  Elegant scarf in an organic taupe alpaca

Meryl..Meryl..we know we are down to the wire but we are in LA,

....and if you need to give it to Michelle Williams as a caonsolation prize, know that "itsatwist" comes in a beautiful box.

sample gift boxes the scarf

and the winner is...an inspirational woman...Go Meryl GO!

A flower girl in a wedding to remember.

    flower girl dress, something special.

              The Flower Girl

It is not possible to remember the many times we have provided flower girl dresses to weddings: red for Holiday weddings, black ones, navy ones, open backs, shorter, longer, with monograms, without, orange ribbons for the Hawaiian wedding...Send it fast to Norway...to France ...to the UK...to someone very famous in Santa Barbara or Washington DC....Contact relaxed brides,  nervous ones, some in disagreement with the mother or mother in law on the shade of the sash......life taking place.

In the end it is all there for that moment that will remain in the memory of all involved. That little girl or little girls will paraded down the aisle feeling they are special and part of something important. These girls will take away memories that involve decorum and elegance, the notion that a wedding is a ceremony marking an important moment in life, that one prepares thoughtfully for it, with care and attention to detail. A ceremony that is bringing to families together and the promise of a new family beginning.

For Valentine’s Day we received a present from Carol Goodfellow, a picture  showing how her special day added up to a kiss surrounded by cheers and we, all of us at IG were there with her,  in every flower girl, all embraced by the green sash Carol had carefully chosen. The perfect picture of a new beginning.

Thank you, Carol.

Dolls...How could we not be happy with what we are doing?

How could we not be happy with what we do. Here is a good example......

Katharina and the dolls she created her self at home in Germany     Katharina and Lumumba, the dolls Georg and Katharina created.   Georg playing with his doll Lumumba

Katharina             Katharina & Lumumba      Georg playing

I was waiting for better light. But I had to give up. It´s dark, dark, dark... So receive the first pictures of our sweet new family members. If you could need them. Be assure, they love the dolls!!! So do I. Carolina Hufnagel, Jan 31, 2012

Carolina, and her two children, Katharina and Georg designed their dolls in the dolls section of our site isabelgarreton.com, they named them, we had fun making them according to their instructions and sent them to Germany where they live. Since, Carolina has sent  us comments and images that include the house the dolls would be arriving to, among others, that we shared in a previous blog "Katharina and Lumumba arrive in Germany". Here are images of her children finally with the dolls...

Could we not be happy doing what we are doing? Specially when we know that behind the fun their is a talented artisan that stands a better chance of keeping his skills for all of us to enjoy?

Isabel Garreton: Founder, Itsatwist – San Pedro, CA

By Caroline Cox

For more than 20 years, Isabel Garreton has used her passion for fashion to help underprivileged women support their families. In doing so, she supplies them with “a dignified work opportunity.” After facing challenges balancing work and motherhood, she realized how hard it must be for women without all the advantages she had to do the same.

She started her own fashion company and hired women from her native Chile who were skilled at sewing and embroidery but had trouble finding jobs. Women in Chile have been underrepresented in the workforce, with most household responsibilities still considered as their duty. Garreton designs dresses, coats, dolls, scarves and more. All of the proceeds from her newest venture, Itsatwist, go back to the women who help create them. Over the past two decades, her team has grown from 21 women to more than 100. Her products have been featured in Vogue, Town & Country Weddings and Parenting magazines.

Little PINK Book: What methods of outreach do you use?

IG: There are always women in search of an opportunity. Our goal is to provide each person with a constant flow of work so they can rest assured that they will have a steady income. By allowing mothers to earn a living to care for their children, we give families a chance for happier, healthier lives.

LPB: Where did you acquire capital to start?

IG: Initially, funding was a challenge and I faced a lot of rejection. I finally got a local small bank to listen to my cause, and they provided a loan. The money allowed the company to grow, and we kept our business at that bank for more than 19 years until it was acquired by a larger, impersonal institution. I started searching again until I found Union Bank, which offered the support I needed.

LPB: What’s been your proudest moment?

IG: When Michelle Bachelet, the President of Chile, came to visit President Obama. She brought the Obama girls two of our dresses! Well aware of the social impact the company has made, President Bachelet also invited our workers to visit her at the Government Palace. Another one of my proudest moments was just a couple of weeks ago, on the day before Thanksgiving. I received an email from the company that said, "We know that in your country, this holiday is when people say thank you. So we wanted to join by saying ‘thank you’ to you.” No words can express where my heart was taken by this message.

Our dolls, Lumumba and Katharina arrive in Germany!

No words can describe the fun and satisfaction we feel when some of you contact us with  details of how our designs come into your lives. Here is the story of Carolina Hufnagel, who ordered 2 dolls that were to be sent to Germany. Lumumba for her son Georg and Katharina for her daughter Katharina.

....The arrival of the dolls have been a real adventure. First of all, I will always have a special relationship to the UPS guys. Whenever I see them, I jump and ask if they have a parcel for us from the US. They always laugh and are a bit unhappy not to be able to help us. Well, yesterday we got a letter that we have to pick up a parcel from the custom´s otherwise it will be send back, NNNOOOOOOO. It was already a bit late, I grabbed the children and told Katharina that we have to pick up the dolls. She was so excited: “My purple doll is coming”. I drove so fast... and we arrived just in time before they close (I don´t have the car everyday, so it was urgent). There was another man getting his parcel, well, actually he wasn´t. He has ordered weapons from the US and was very mad, that the custom officer wouldn´t give the weapons to him. The other officer got our parcel and I told the officer that we expect dolls to arrive. He had to laugh. Too bad, but we had to open the parcel there. I wanted to take pictures of that event. But Katharina was screaming: “Oh my dolls arrived. My purple doll is there” and Georg said.” Hello, hello, hello...” and the other guy was screaming “my weapons, give me my weapons”. Well, couldn´t have been any scurile? Right. So we went to our car, the two pressing their dolls in their arms and talking with them all the way back home.... They slept in their beds and I will defenetly take MANY pictures... they are so, so, so cute, sweet, einfach phantastisch!!! Thank you so much. I really adore your work!!!!!!!

Be ready for more Katharina and Lumumba stories.

This is the house and place where Katharina and Lumumba will live with Georg and Katharina

We will post pictures of Georg and Katharina with their dolls as we get them.

Being part of ceremonies with great emotional content for your families or receiving images of a fabulous twirl or a smile of a girl and her new dress or a crazy way to wear our "itsatwist" or a visit to NY with one of our coats it is all so rewarding, it makes us all HAPPY at Isabel Garreton. Those images and comments close the circle that starts with a design idea whose purpose is to make people feel good while making them, wearing them, playing with them or giving them as gifts.

Thank you Carolina

IdeaMensch People with ideas. Interviews Isabel Garreton

I have only involved myself with products that I believe would benefit those who make them as much as they benefit those who use them. Isabel Garreton

Isabel Garreton was a social entrepreneur before it was fashionable.  Her company, Isabel Garreton, Inc., empowers through fashion. For over 20 years, her namesake upscale children’s clothing line has provided a dignified work opportunity for disadvantaged women from Ms. Garreton’s native country of Chile.  She personally taught these women old-fashioned skills like weaving and embroidery and together they have made exquisite dresses, eye-catching coats and delightful special occasion gowns.

Ms. Garreton has impacted social change.  The extraordinary women on her team support themselves and their families and have had a chance for happier and healthier lives.

Two decades into her social-impact venture, Ms. Garreton’s trusted team is helping her launch 2 new lines: Itsatwist versatile women’s accessories and handmade customizable dolls.  All of the proceeds from her collection of women’s accessories, children’s clothing and handmade dolls go back to the women who created them, making each and every item a gift for 2.  She enjoys her work and hopes that her customers do, too.  “It matters to me that people love what they buy from us, that they will talk about it and that it brings something special to their lives besides a purchase,” she says.

With Itsatwist, Isabel offers a luxurious sensory experience with plenty of room for the wearer’s own creative expression. The hand-knit pieces highlight modern craftiness, soft opulence and surprising durability.  From a playful wrap or sexy shawl to a warm hood or striking belt, Itsatwist can be whatever you make it and marks a chic alternative to traditional accessories.

What are you working on right now?

As usual, I am involved in several projects at once. I am always searching for new artisans that can benefit from our existing designs. At the same time, I am looking to bring new products to market that are meaningful in their construction and/or function.

It matters to me that people love what they buy from us, that they will talk about it and that it brings something special to their lives besides a purchase.

Where did the idea for Itsatwist come from?

It was during the process of putting together the Fall/Winter 2011 Collection for children. I was working with a group of talented women when we started playing with a knitted form that could turn into many different things and could be used in a variety of ways. I thought it was playful for children, but every adult who came in contact with it was fascinated by it, including men!  As we discovered more and more possibilities for it, the enthusiasm grew and we tweaked it until…voila! Itsatwist was born. If you watch the video “How to Twist” on our website, we show how to get the most out of it.  Size and age make no difference in how great it look. We made it a point to create beautiful packaging for it, as well.

What does your typical day look like?

We often deal with several countries at once, so every day is quite different. I have multiple responsibilities: sometimes I need to be extremely creative, while at other times I have to be very pragmatic. I am constantly switching gears.

How do you bring ideas to life?

Ever since I can remember, I have been transforming things and environments. The moment I understand that there may be a better way of doing something, it is hard for me not to take action. I can be inspired by almost anything: a person’s thought, a combination of colors, even the way someone hangs a coat. Every aspect of life and nature motivate me. Then the moment comes when I stop and try to articulate all these influences into something tangible and meaningful.

3 trends that excite you?

There is 1 trend that excites me enough for 3. I have noticed that today’s youth feel empowered and make a point of traveling the world. People are searching for lifestyle options that have personal meaning.  They carry values that will make this a better place for themselves, their parents and their children. I do not see indifference, I see passion and curiosity. I love it.

What was the worst job you ever had and what did you learn from it?

It was not a job, it was a volunteer program I participated in. We visited older people in retirement homes where they were barely provided enough to survive. It was difficult for me to see that. I want to help everyone, especially those who are less fortunate.

If you were to start again, what would you do differently?

Talk! I did not do any networking for a very long time. I managed my companies and searched for answers myself. I worked hard to balance raising 3 girls and running 2 corporations. I did not learn how generous people are with their knowledge and experience until recently. I am so impressed by how much my life, both personally and  professionally, has been enriched just by being open and talking to people about what I do. Networking is a wonderful resource; I should have done it sooner.

What is the one thing you did/do as an entrepreneur that you would do over and over again and recommend everybody else do?

I have only involved myself with products that I believe would benefit those who make them as much as they benefit those who use them.

Tell us a secret.

More than everything I have done in life , and I have done a lot of things, I have enjoyed being a mother to my 3 wonderful girls.

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?

There are so many – I see ideas everywhere. One that comes to mind is a bed I designed when my girls were born. It satisfied their sensory integration and neurologic needs for development. Friends and family loved the idea; I know my married daughter plans to use the bed for her first child. I was encouraged to market the idea, I never did it.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

Books are a passion of mine. Malcolm Gladwell is a must.  Specifically, Blink and Outliers are the ones that I think are most meaningful for those who have an entrepreneurial spirit. Blink speaks of what we asses from our environment in the blink of an eye and the roll it plays on how we move into that environment. Outliers refers to several instances in which behavior steps outside the norm and their impact .

If you weren’t working on the company’s growth, what would you be doing?

It is hard to say. What I do defines so much of my time and motivation.

Three people we should follow on Twitter and why?

I would be dishonest if I responded to this question since I do not follow anyone on Twitter.

When was the last time you laughed out loud? What caused it?

A moment ago I was arriving home to California from Chile. I had one of those bags with 4 wheels, and my driveway has a steep incline. I turned for a moment and what do you think? The bag had taken its own trip. I ran after it as it rolled faster and faster down the street. I looked like a cartoon character as I chased it down the hill.

Who would you love to see interviewed on IdeaMensch?

Anyone with a great idea who is willing to share the motivation behind it.

Do you think you have done a good job?

Because everyday I invest myself in improving every aspect of what we do, sometimes I have to stop and force myself into thinking all that we have done well.

Who has made the biggest difference in the success of your endeavor?

My husband.
