Christening? Baptism? Blessing?...What to wear when it’s a boy.

Posted by Veronica Galen on Oct 29, 2013 4:00:00 AM

(Blessings are not the same as Christenings or Baptisms. More information on this below)

After 25 years offering gowns, rompers, and accessories used in many, many Christenings, Baptisms, and Blessings, we know that to use a gown for a boy’s christening is a frequent debate close to the heart of many families.

If you are a boy and not Prince George, what to wear for your christening can be a family kerfuffle. Mom’s are often happy to put their sons in a gown, perhaps not as elaborate as the one Prince William and Kate Middleton’s baby wore selected by the force of many years of tradition, but a gown for a boy is preferred by many moms. They endure the dads concern that it is too feminine. While for some dads the disapproval is serious, others cave in by the weight of family traditions or love for their wives. Some dads, who may have been in a gown themselves and are no longer concern with gender ID, are more confortable with this tradition and more likely to use the same gown for a girl or a boy in their family. It becomes an heirloom, a family treasure for years to come. For this reason the fabric, the design, the craft, and finishing touches in every piece matters.

For other dads and some moms the preferred choices are rompers for boys, the style depending where in the world they live, what time of the year the event takes place, and how formal they want the ceremony to be.

Not only are Christenings, Baptisms and Blessings a religious ceremony, they are also important family traditions. We often do monogramming of the family initials either on the garment or baby’s name and date of the event on the slip, where other new members of the family will add their name and event date. Can be a siblings or a different generation.  Some families choose to have the baby’s initials in a special blanket, bib or bonnet the baby wore.

How was the choice made in your family?

Find below from Wikipedia some truly interesting information regarding the content and meaning of the ceremony itself, who practices it, how the meaning changes depending on the denomination and more.

Baptism (from the Greek noun βάπτισμα baptisma; see below) is a Christian rite of admission and adoption, almost invariably with the use of water, into the Christian Church generally and also a particular church tradition. In some traditions, baptism is also called christening, but for others the word "christening" is reserved for the baptism of infants.

Most Christians belong to denominations that practice infant baptism. Denominational families that practice infant baptism include Catholics, Eastern and Oriental Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Methodists, some Nazarenes the United Church of Christ (UCC), Moravian Church, Metropolitan Community Church, Wesleyans, Episcopalians, and the Reformed churches.

The exact details of the baptismal ceremony vary among Christian denominationsthe belief is that infant baptism has spiritual value for the infant, defined differently by each denomination. Some believing it is as a way to incorporate newborn babies into the secular community as well as inducting them into the Christian faith.

The naming and blessing of a child in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not a christening, The purpose of the practice is twofold: to give a baby an official name and to provide an opportunity to give a blessing for the child's spiritual and physical welfare

It is common for this blessing to be an occasion for family members to gather. In some families, it is also traditional for the baby or older child to be dressed in white clothing similar to a christening gown, but this is not required.

Five Reasons a Royal Baby Awakes Timeless Emotions

Posted by Veronica Galen on Jul 23, 2013 4:05:00 PM

We have been wondering what the frenzy around Prince William and Kate Middleton’s baby says about all of us?

Royal Baby Boy, hospital, Kate, Will

Even when my only connection to tabloids are the titles I read while in line at the supermarket, I felt a sort of a happy anticipation when I heard on the news that “The Duchess of Cambridge was in hospital due to deliver who would become the 3rd in line to the British Throne.” Mind you, I have no particular interest in British Royalty, my husband on the other hand seems to know a lot about them.

So, I figured there must be some universal reasons why the world press is parked outside a hospital in London.

1.Fairytales, We all grew up with them. A handsome prince and his beautiful princess fall in love, marry and lived h….we know how it ends. Does someone come to mind?

Cinderella, Fairytale

2.A Newborn, No matter how cynical one may become, a baby touches whatever hope we have for the planet to be a good place.

Smocking, Baby, Bonnet

3.Familiarity, Unlike other royal families, the British Royal Family has afforded us through the years a glimpse into grand events …and the joy and sorrows at the heart of all families. A newborn guaranties many stories to come.

British, jubilee, Prince

4.Tragedy, Diana’s untimely death, brought empathy from the world to her boys and we feel good when they seem to achieve adulthood being nice, responsible and are happy. This birth is certainly one of those moments.

Diana, Charles, Prince William, Prince Harry

5.Happiness, When the news informs us daily of a violent, dangerous and fragile world, A newborn brings the illusion of a fairytale, the closeness of familiar, the possibility to overcome tragedy and the happiness that springs from hope.

Pregnant, Royal Couple, Will, Kate Baby, Kiss, Foot

I think this little prince, not a week old, has already given many of us at least a smile. Thank you, and welcome to the world. May we suggest something for your wardrobe?

Meet Javier! The Artisan behind our Custom Handmade Dolls!

Posted by Veronica Galen on Jul 16, 2013 7:00:00 AM

A few years back in my constant search for artisans I met Javier and his wide variety of handmade dolls and toys, I was very impressed by the playfulness and variety of his designs. It took a while for us to find a way to incorporate his dolls to what we do. I really wanted to develop a way in which anyone could engage in the creative and playful process of designing their own doll. The final pieces came together last summer our website has a Dolls Tab and is invited to create their very own doll and name it. Two to three weeks later they will receive the doll with the characteristics they chose. It has been tremendous FUN to see how engaged people get and we have had dolls with names as simple as DORA to more involved ones such as ANN WAVERLY, with and without fringe/bangs, black and white, blonds and brunettes, straight and curly hair...you name it...each with an adorable outfit!

I was intrigued by Javier and his work and decided to interview him a week ago. We met at a coffee shop where he told me how he started making dolls.

His grand father had been a carpenter and made toys, his mother also made toys, many dolls. He grew up helping them along until he went on to study graphic design, a field in which he worked for 15 years. During a visit to his parents home, in the south, he run into old magazines, pictures and toy patterns and had a revelation, this was who he was, these were his roots; he wanted to go back to the playful and fantasy environment he grew up in of handmade toys. Initially he kept his job while developing his ideas, and eventually he felt confident enough to believe he could support himself doing what he loved and he's never regretted it.

It has been a pleasure to have Javier join the group of wonderful artisans behind everything we do at IG and I look forward to the fun possibilities we will be able to offer you in the future.

Brides: Tips for a Happy Flower Girl

Posted by Veronica Galen on Jul 11, 2013 7:00:00 AM

For many women, having been a flower girl is one of their early special memories! Here are a few tips to make it a great memory for the special little girl in your wedding ceremony:

Flower Girl, Bride, Wedding

1) Take a few minutes to be with the flower girl while you’re dressed as the Bride in your full gown and makeup. Ask if you can help her prepare the petal basket. Brides look like a beautiful princess to a little girl and it's a magical moment for them and you. It will make her feel like she is a part of something important and you'll get great pictures for your photo album.

Flower Girl, Practice, Wedding

 2) Have a Plan. Ask your flower girl's mommy to please come early before people arrive. The flower girl should practice walking down the aisle and be given very clear simple instructions like, “walk right along this crack”. Give her a lot of positive reinforcement. If you give her a destination, she'll have something to focus on, especially if the eyes of all your wedding guests make her nervous. Some brides have the flower girl put her basket on a pedestal just to the side of the ceremony or seat her parents in the front row just to the side of the family and seat them there for the rehearsal too. If you are going to have music as she walk down the isle, try to have it play at least once in the practice so as much of the experience can feel familiar when the wedding begins.

Wedding Aisle, Flower Girl, Ceremony

3) Be Flexible. While many people will say to you "It's your Day," in a child's mind every day is their day! If they don't want to wear their hair the way you dreamed, or keep taking off the perfect shoes you picked, try to let it go. In the end, she'll be beautiful no matter what and you can crop bare feet out of pictures, but you can't take a scowl off her face.

Flower Girl, Wedding, Dress

4) Two by Two. If you have multiple flower girls, pair them with a girl a few years older to walk together. The older girls can help guide younger girls. Have them hold hands at the beginning in case they get jitters and have them play games or share toys ahead of time so they feel comfortable together.

Flower Girl, Toys

5) Reward Her. If you provide something fun to distract her, like coloring books and crayons wrapped up like a gift, it'll help keep her amused throughout the reception and give her parents a chance to eat dinner. For this wedding it was a yoyo and some fun plastic hair clips.

Wedding, Flower Girl, Dancing

6) Let kids be kids. Once her official duties are over, dance with her, let her run around, give her a piece of cake if she is still awake! If it's all too much, the bridal suite is usually empty during the ceremony and reception, so it works great as backup plan with PJs and a blanket for a sleepy little girl.

Your wedding will be filled with wonderful memories with friends and family. With a little planning, your flower girl will also have wonderful memories as she imagines becoming a Bride someday!

Wish Tree: Holiday Idea from Isabel Garreton!

Posted by Veronica Galen on Dec 17, 2012 2:46:00 PM

I have been designing a good part of my life to afford women born into difficult situations a dignified work oportunity. I have enjoyed it all: dressescoats, dolls, itsatwist. It has brought wonderful people into my life and I am grateful for that.

At this time of the year I thought I would share something I designed for my family...A WISH TREE...

From Isabel Garreton

the idea is that everyone notes their wish or wishes in a strip of paper and attaches it to the tree. On Christmas Eve we will place all the wishes in the fireplace so they may travel to Heaven. For those who do not have a blackboard wall available, you may try the colored painters tape that doesn't damage the wall.
